Design Notes

Hiya, Andy here... got some background information on the site for you.

It's all Todd Voros's fault. A few years ago, he saw one of those Kemp's trucks with the "It's the Cows" logo on it. Not the current design. The old design was a circle format with "Kemps" arced across the top, "It's the Cows" across the middle, and "Incorporated" arced across the bottom. So while we were lounging in his pool, he was babbling about secret conspiracies involving cows. What's "It's the Cows, Incorporated?"

The Bovine Illuminati, of course. I'm not sure where I first heard the phrase, but it fit. Tom (a former housemate of mine) had every edition of "Illuminati" that Steve Jackson Games had ever released, and was in the process of collecting an entire set of their "New World Order" game. I had also read Robert Anton Wilson's Illuminati and Schroedinger's Cat trilogies. And being a Wisconsinite, cow references abounded.

Since then, I've been planning to do a Bovine Illuminati web page, I've just been waiting for the content and the time. I originally was thinking of using "bovineilluminati.com" (which is available) but after years of exchanging email addresses at parties got sick of long domains that are hard to explain. I mulled over possibilities such as "cowlounge," "moocafe" and others, but when I found that I could get a 5-letter domain, two syllables and easy to spell I went for it. "webmaster@bovil.com" is a lot easier to say, spell and write down than "webmaster@bovineilluminati.com."

As to the design... The Cow in the Pyramid is of course a riff on the Eye in the Pyramid (I stole one of Steve Jackson's pyramid graphics to base it off of). Holstein spots were necessary, and I found a tutorial on how to make Holstein spot tileable backgrounds in Photoshop. Beyond that, it's pretty simple; a masthead and a navigation panel that are SSI included on each page. I've recently switched from the Slooze photo album to Gallery to manage my photos, and I'm very happy with it.
